5W News for June 20, 2016 The Last Day of School!

Dear Grade 5's and Parents:

Our school year has gone like the wind...tomorrow is the last day!

Here are some things to note:

1.  We will watch the Secret World of Og movie.

2.  School ends at noon.

3.  Sorry, last minute request---only if it's not too much trouble, students could bring a treat to share with the class, eg. a bag of chips, cookies, etc.

4.  Bring a bag to take home plastic bin.  Students will need to take home bins and then bring them back to their GRADE 6 class in September.

Thanks for a great year together.  Have a wonderful summer!

Blessings,

Mr.Wu

Victoria Fieldtrip June 9th Schedule

Info sheet: Field Trip to Victoria

Here are the final details of our field trip to Victoria:

Date:               Thursday, June 9, 2016

Time:               Be at the school by 7:00 a.m. SHARP!
We will return to the school by approximately 7:30 p.m. (Please be at the school to pick up your child at that time as the school will not be open and there will be no teachers to supervise students).

Travel:             We will be taking various buses and BC Ferries (Tsawassen-Swartz Bay)

Adults:             Teachers: Mrs. Gysbers, Mrs. Shen, and Mr. Wu
5W parents: Mr. Ho, Mr. Jang, Mrs. Yeong, Mrs. Cho, Mr. Fong, Mr. Huttunen, Mrs. Lin
5G/H parents: Mrs. Chou, Mr. Lai, Mrs. Lee, Mr. Markus, Mr. Sun, Mrs. Weiland, and Mrs. Yap
Pack:               Sweatshirt, jacket, snack, and packed lunch.   We recommend that you pack a little extra food than usual since we are gone for such a long day.  Students may choose to bring some spending money, but really only need money to purchase dinner (approx. $10).  If students choose to bring extra spending money, we recommend that students bring no more than $30.00 (that’s $20 spending money + $10 for dinner), and have a pouch/wallet to carry it in.  Students should have a backpack to carry all these items in. Please dress for the weather. Sunscreen is recommended as well.

Dinner:            Students may order kid’s meals (ferry packs) from White Spot on the ferry ride home or bring their own dinner.  If students order from White Spot, they need to keep $10 aside to pay for this.  On the back are the menu options for students – we ask that students choose their preferred meal ahead of time so that we don’t hold up the line on the ferry (we want other passengers to like us!)  These options are for information only and does not need to be returned to us.
* Please talk to Mr. Wu or Mrs. Gysbers if your son/daughter is not able to eat a kid’s meal from White Spot for dietary reasons and we can make other arrangements.

Tours:              We have the opportunity to go on a guided class tour of the provincial legislature as well as a self-guided tour at the Royal B.C. Museum.

Free time:        Students will have the opportunity to tour downtown Victoria (in their
designated parent-chaperone groups) for approximately 1 hour.  This
will be the time when students may spend some money on souvenirs, a treat, etc.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Wu
Mrs. Gysbers

Kid’s meal options from White Spot:

Choose a meal: (comes with fries, drink and dessert treat)

___  Hot dog
___  Cheeseburger
___  Hamburger
___   Chicken strips
___ Veggie burger

Drinks: You will be given a cup with your meal and then you may choose a drink from the soft drink dispenser, or you may order milk, apple juice, or orange juice at an additional cost (but will still be covered by $10).

Note: This does not need to be handed in to your teacher, but for you to choose on your own before we leave for our trip.

Post: Victoria field trip chaperones
Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Thank you to so many of you who volunteered to come on our Victoria field trip; however, as mentioned in the letter, we will only be taking 7 parents from each class.

We did a draw yesterday, and the following parents’ names were pulled out:
(Rachel’s mom)
(Kaden’s dad)
(Kiyah’s parent)
(Joshua’s dad)
(Matias’ dad)
 (Amos’ mom)
(Samuel H’s dad )
We will send home more details about a week before the field trip.

And two other items to bring to your attention:

Just a reminder that we will begin sessions on puberty next Tuesday (May 3) as part of HACE class.  They will take place on May 3, 10, and 17.  You should have received a letter home with more information and a link to a video we will be showing the Grade 5s.  Actually, I'll include the link again here:

http://www.pgschoolprograms.com/programs.php?pid=1

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can click on the videos.  The boys will watch the "Always Changing - Boys (original version)" and the girls will watch the "Always Changing Girls (original version)"

And lastly, you may have noticed some information regarding students and expectations for them after school in the school newsletter.  Just a couple reminders specific to Grade 5 students:
- They can be picked up on Falaise (by the preschool playground) up until 3:45.
- If students are picked up after 3:45 because they have Carver siblings coming in by bus, then they should head back to the front of VCS at 3:45.  We do not want a small group of students left by themselves at the preschool playground.
- We strongly discourage students being left unattended for an extended period of time.

Let me know if you have any questions.

5W News for April

Here is a brief overview of what we are learning in class:
This week we have started a new Socials unit on government. We will begin looking at the various systems of government that exist (democracy, communism, dictatorship, monarchy, republic, anarchy) and then we will focus much of our time on how governments in Canada work at all 3 levels: federal, provincial, and municipal. Please read about our learning about Canada’s government in Kidblog.
Our study of government will connect with our much anticipated class trip to Victoria on June 9th will involve a tour of the legislature (details of this field trip will be sent home soon).

In Reading, we have started the novel, Underground to Canada.  You can hear a pin drop when we are reading this in class as students have been very engaged in the story right from the beginning.
In Writing, we will be involved in the writing process.  Our writing assignments will be connected with learning in other subjects, such as descriptions of the levels of government or Underground to Canada book review.
In Bible, we have started reading I Timothy.  Students will learn about the apostle Paul, Timothy, and the early church.
In Physical Education, students are enjoying playing badminton.  We will be starting a track and field unit in preparation for the Swangard Stadium Track Meet on May 31st.

In HACE (Health and Career Education), we have begun a unit on Healthy Living where we went over various areas of wellness (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and social). As part of this unit, we will focus more closely on healthy eating, sleep, and relationships.

We are focusing on number operations (adding and subtracting with decimals, multiplication, and long division) in Math.  Today, students experienced the challenge of solving Math Magic squares.

And finally, in Art, we are learning about Emily Carr, a famous Canadian artist who captured the wonder of nature in her paintings.  Studying British Columbia’s landscapes connects well with our Science unit about renewable resources in our province.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Warm regards,

Mr.Wu

Grade 5 Second Term Report Cards and

March 11, 2016

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Today is our last day before Spring Break and report cards will be handed-out.

As there have been changes to the report card this year, so there have been questions (understandably) among parents at VCS about what various levels/grades mean now and how we assess learning.  This is difficult to summarize in a short explanation as it depends on the subject area and the type of learning we are looking at, so we’ve included a chart that shows how we assess some of the types of learning that come up in a number of subjects.  (Please note, this chart is not exhaustive of every type of learning/subject we assess, but is a guideline for you). We are also on a journey as teachers, as a school and a province with our assessment and teaching.

Grade 5 Assessment
Guideline
I/1
Does not meet expectations or incomplete
C-/2
Minimally meets expectations
C/3
Meets basic expectations
B/4
Fully meets expectations
A/5
Exceeds expectations

Work can be:
·        Detailed
·        New ideas
·        Goes beyond
·        Wow factor

Please be aware that our goal is for students to do their personal best as they learn.  We would like to see students fully meeting expectations.  However, not every student is at that level yet in every subject for various reasons (we are complex beings!), so we continuously work with students to grow and develop, realizing that their learning is a process, not a means to an end grade.  Also, some students may exceed grade level expectations in some areas of learning, which could mean that they exceeded our expectations within the grade 5 level work we are doing, or they went beyond grade 5 level work.

Lastly, if you have further questions, feedback for us, or any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us - we’d be happy to meet with you.

    Regards,

                      VCS Grade 5 Teachers
