Heritage Family Paragraph(s) Grade 5

Students have completed their family trees.  Next, students are writing about their family heritage and culture.  Students should include a catchy opening sentence, interesting examples of their family values, beliefs, and traditions. Also, students may describe briefly how their family came to Canada. Finally, students should include a closing sentence that captures what is the most important family heritage tradition/value to pass down to future generations.

Here is one example of a student's family heritage:

Grade 5 Social Studies: Heritage, Immigration, and Citizenship

As part of our work in Grade 5 Social Studies the class have been learning about citizenship, immigration and heritage.  Much of our reading and writing will be connected to these topics.

Citizenship – On Friday the 7th of March we will be having a role play scenario where the students, in mock family groups, will be interviewed to see if they can attain citizenship.

Students will have to know some of the following:

- Basic Canadian history
- Basic Canadian geography
- The Canadian National Anthem (first verse)
- The Canadian Oath of Citizenship
- The democratic values of Canada
- The documentation they need to get citizenship

Over the next two weeks in class students will learn in more detail about what they will have to know for their role-play scenario.

Immigration – After spring break we will be going on a class trip to Vancouver Museum to attend a session on immigration in Canada and explore some of the museum exhibits.  The date for this field trip is May 7th.

Heritage – The Grade Fives have already began their heritage collage posters and we will continue to work on these in class (heritage posters and oral presentations are due on the 4th of March).

Students may bring 2-3 photos from home to add to their heritage poster. Students will need your help finding out as much as they can about their family history and heritage.

We will also have a Heritage celebration lunch on the 14th of March. From 12.10 to 1.00 p.m. we would like to invite you to come and ‘taste the world’! Each student will bring a dish from his/her heritage country/countries. More details will follow in due time. The heritage collage posters will be displayed during the lunch for you to have a look at.

We hope that the heritage collage work and lunch will be a great time to celebrate the beauty of God’s creation and a time to wonder at our diversity.

Below is a sample of a 2013 Heritage Poster to give an idea how your collage should look:
