Merry Christmas

Dear Parents and Students,

Today the class participated beautifully in the afternoon Christmas Concert rehearsal.  Please ensure that your child is in the classroom by 7 pm tomorrow night. The Thursday Christmas Concert begins at 7:30 pm. Mr.Kwong asked that students dress formal and flashy.

Also, Thursday afternoon students will participate in High Tech and High Touch Science workshop.  Over the holidays, students should make sure that they have the materials and supplies necessary to conduct their Science Fair experiment in January.  It would be great to have some parent volunteers help supervise students begin their experiments that first week back January 7-10th.  Please contact me if you have a morning or afternoon free.

Remember Friday morning we go skating at 8Rinks in Burnaby.  Students should bring skates and helmet if they have them. Students should bring a bag to take home any PE strip, clothes, or food. We will be cleaning out our lockers, desks, and room, so a cleaning cloth will be needed.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas,

Mr.Wu

This Friday, December 6th, a pizza lunch will be provided to celebrate Shannen's birthday.

Teachers are busy marking and writing report cards for the next few days, so students should be busy working on assignments.  Here is a brief overview of the week:

Bible--Students received a new Bible Memory Verse Luke 1:77-79, and are reading the Gospel of Luke and writing poems related to the Biblical account about the birth of Jesus.  The Bible Memory Quiz is on Friday, December 6th.

Spelling--Students received a new spelling list yesterday and their test is on Friday, December 6th.

Writing--Students have been engaged in the writing process and have been learning about the qualities of strong writing.  Students have written about a variety of topics including their teachers, their own strengths and abilities, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor and theologian whom they heard about in chapel a couple of weeks ago.

Math--We have finished our study of fractions and currently we are learning how to round whole numbers.

Science Fair--Students should have completed a proposal describing what experiment that they are planning to do.  Each proposal should include the topic, the question/problem that the experiment addresses, the knowledge that students already have about their topic, and what further research/.study is necessary still for the students to do before conducting their experiment.  Next, students should be researching and finding relevant information about their topic.

PE--Students are learning basketball skills.  Please ensure that your child brings their VCS PE strip and runners Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

October 15th - 18th 5W News

Dear Grade 5 Parents and Students,
I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.  I enjoyed many workshops learning about Art, Math, technology, and Apple Apps for teaching, at a two-day Professional Development Conference in Langley.
Thank you to all our parent-drivers who participated in a great field trip to the Cannery field trip in Richmond last week. Students learned a lot about how simple machines were used to process salmon.
Our next field trip will be to Fort Langley on Wednesday, November 6th.  We will need parent-drivers for this field trip also.  A permission form will be sent home this week.
Next week will be Bear Creek Run in Surrey on Wednesday, October 23rd.  Mr.Dmitruk will send home a permission form this week to all students involved in the Bear Creek Run.
Last week, students received a weekly schedule and a homework guidelines page.  Regular weekly homework may include Bible Memory, Spelling, and assignments in other subjects.  Please remember that some students may require more or less time completing homework assignments than other students.
Homework - It is recommended that students spend between 30 and 50 minutes doing homework a night. The purpose of homework is to review and build core skills, complete class assignments, bridge learning between home and school and to study for evaluations. It is always hard to work this out for each child as they all work and learn at different speeds and need to spend more time in different areas.  The amount of time spent on homework may depend on the individual student  in terms of  effort, focus, and efficiency.  The homework page describes the regular homework in certain subjects that students will have and descriptions of how to complete them as well as suggestions to help learn or memorize. Ways to study for tests will be taught throughout the year and attached to review sheets. Also, there will be a sheet describing what a typical day could look like. However, please work out with your child what order and spread of the workload works best for them. Please remember assigned homework with a due date takes priority. On days where students have less assigned work, they can choose other skills to work on or review what they are learning in class.  Please contact me if you have further questions or comments about homework in Grade 5.
Typing Tutor -  We will be focusing on improving typing skills in computer class especially this first half of the year. However, we don’t have enough computer time for students to become proficient at typing. We have created an account for each at http://www.typingweb.com/tutor/. The progress and results are logged for us to see. Please encourage your child to practice at home, and check for proper fingering!
Blessings,
Mr.Wu

Breakfast Buffet Thursday Morning June 20th

Dear 5W Parents:

We will celebrate the end of our school year with a breakfast buffet tomorrow morning from 8:50-9:30 a.m. I have asked students to bring a breakfast item such as cereal, muffins, or fruit.  Students have written in their planners what they will bring to class to share.  Please, do not feel that you need to buy something.  Anything that you already have in your fridge or kitchen pantry is fine.  Also, I have requested that students bring their own cutlery, bowl, cup, fork and spoon, In addition, please label any food item that contains peanuts in consideration of students with food allergies.

Tomorrow and Friday, students will need to clean-up the classroom and will need a box/bag to bring home personal supplies.  A clean cloth or rag to wipe down their desks, chairs, and lockers will be needed too.  Finally, if there any school Science textbooks or class novels at home, please return by this Friday, June 21st.

Thanks for a great year!

Blessings,

Mr.Wu

Science World Field Trip- Important Information

Dear Parents:

The grade 4/5 class will be going to Science World on Friday, May 31st to take part in a number of activities related to our science studies in class. This is primarily a wrap-up event to our “Intermediate Science Adventure” about the human body, but students will also be learning about a variety of other topics related to our science units in grade 4 & 5.

Our class will be doing the following activities while at Science World:

1]   Omnimax movie: “Human Body”
From the Science World Website:
The Human Body takes a look at the biological processes that go on without our control and often without our notice. Throughout the film, we follow a family as they go about their daily routines. But this is no ordinary story. It’s a tale of what takes place beneath the skin—a tale that allows us to see the extraordinary accomplishments of our everyday lives.

2]   Body Worlds Exhibit:
From the “Body Worlds” Website:
The BODY WORLDS exhibitions are first-of-their-kind exhibitions through which visitors learn about anatomy, physiology, and health by viewing real human bodies, using an extraordinary process called Plastination- a groundbreaking method for specimen preservation invented by Dr. von Hagens in 1977.
Each exhibition features more than 200 real human specimens, including whole-body plastinates, individual organs, organ configurations and transparent body slices. The specimens on display stem from the
body donation program that Gunther von Hagens established in 1983.
The exhibitions also allow visitors to see and better understand the long-term impact of diseases, the effects of tobacco consumption and the mechanics of artificial supports such as knees and hips. To date, more than 36 million people around the world have viewed the BODY WORLDS exhibits.

**This exhibit is very graphic in nature, and parents are encouraged to read more about it so that they can fully understand what it is all about. Grade four teachers will be posting links on our class websites, so parents can read more about it. You are also welcome to google “Body Worlds” for more information as well. We are providing parents with this information because we know that this exhibit might not be suitable for all students.

From a Christian perspective, we feel that this exhibit will, in a very real way, demonstrate to our students that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made" by God.   We want our students to gain a greater insight into God's amazing creation of the human body, and to see that our bodies are temples we are called to take care of.  This exhibit specifically focuses on the importance of taking care of your body, and many of the displays show what happens when we don't treat our bodies in the way God intended.

If, after reading more about this exhibit, you feel that you do not want your child to view these exhibits, they are still welcome to come on the fieldtrip!  There will be lots more opportunities for science learning and exploration through the other galleries. (While groups of students tour “Body Worlds”, students who do not wish to participate will be lead through other exhibits instead).

3]    Other exhibits and galleries – there are a wide variety of exhibits that all students will be lead through in small groups that apply directly to the grade 4 & 5 curriculum. These include:
--- Grade 5:  “Creativity in Motion” – pulleys, springs and sprockets! -Simple Machines
---Grade 4:  “Eureka”- Light & Sound
---Grade 4: “Travesia”- Journey of a Blue Whale -Habitats, migration
---Grade 4 & 5: “Our World”- Sustainability & Stewardship
….and more!  (check out the Science World website for even more great exhibits!)

Thank you,
from the intermediate teachers!

5W French Play

Dear 5W Parents:

5W will be performing their French play "Louis la Grenouille" on Wednesday June 19th between 10:45 and 11:45am.  If you are free at that time, we'd love you to come and watch our performance.

Students should, by now, have learned their lines thoroughly. Please take some time this week to ask your son/daughter to say their lines to you. If they are not confident in their lines, please encourage them to spend some time each evening this week working on memorizing their lines.  If they have any hesitation with pronunciation, it would be helpful if they read their lines along with the DVD.

Thank you for support,
Julie Kawa

1.) Swangard Track Meet – this is an all-day event on Tuesday, May 28.  Usually only about half of the students in Grade 5 qualify and participate in this event; however, due to our small classes this year, the majority of students will participate in at least one event this year, and there would only be about a handful of students staying back at VCS. Therefore, we have decided that all Grade 5 students will attend the Swangard Track Meet, whether they are participating in an event or not.
Those not participating in an event will either be helping me or Mrs. Gysbers with running an event and/or they will be in the stands cheering on their classmates and school.  A letter with more information was sent home this week.  Students have been told if they are participating and wrote this in their planner.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
2.)  Chaperones for the Victoria field trip on Friday, May 31st – Thank you for returning all of the permission forms for this field trip.  We stated that we will be taking 5 parent chaperones for each class, and so here are the parents that will be coming along:
  • 5W parents – Mr. Deo Santos, Mrs. Stephanie Huynh, Mr. Deepk Hayre, and Mrs. Eva Lau, and Mrs. Ragina Naidu
  • 5G/H parents – Mrs. Amanda Ho, Mr. Tom Tsang, Mr. Dave Port, Mr. Sam Leung, and Mrs. Rebecca Janke
We have sent a more detailed informational letter home regarding the Victoria field trip last week.
3) Walkathon--Friday, May 24th--Parent-Volunteers are needed from 12:30-2:30.
4)Science World Fieldtrip--Friday, May 31st--A detailed permission letter will be sent home this week.  Please return the signed permission form by Monday, May 27th.   We will need parents to drive and supervise students on this fieldtrip.  Thank you.
Blessings!

GRADE 5W NEWS FOR MAY

Dear Parents and Students:

We have had an exciting and interesting time learning about government.  In Science class students examined the issue of open-pit mining in British Columbia.  Students researched about the advantages and disadvantages of open-pit mining and then expressed their opinions.  I was impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm about the subject.  During our discussion, students voiced their positions for or against open-pit mining with much conviction.

Yesterday, the NDP MLA Mable Elmore visited our class to talk with students about the upcoming provincial election.  Last week the Liberal candidate Gurjit Dhillon spoke with our class.  My students asked a number of thoughtful questions to both politicians about issues such as Christian Education, employment, economy, and the environment.  We thank both candidates for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit our class.

As part of our study of government, both grade 5 classes will be going to Victoria on June 14th.  A parent-letter was sent home this week and should be returned by May 7th.

Blessings,

Mr.Wu

Grade 5 Letters to the Prime Minister

Dear Grade 5 Parents:

As part of our Canadian Government unit, students have written letters to the Prime Minister.  I have asked my students to show their letters to their parents on the weekend.  Parents, please initial the back of the letter as indication that you have read your child's letter.  Students need to bring back their letters on Monday when we will mail  them to the Office of the Prime Minister in Ottawa.

Also, I have invited the NDP, LIBERAL, and GREEN PARTY candidates in the Vancouver-Kingsway riding to come to speak to our class.  So far, the Liberal candidate has confirmed her visit with our class on April 29th.

Finally, please talk to your child about the upcoming provincial election in May.  Our students will have a chance to vote for the provincial party of their choice prior to the actual election on May 14th.  Remember  our government leaders as the Apostle Paul urges us to pray for "all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by joy and happiness" (I Timothy 2:2)

Blessings,

Dave Wu

Grade 5W March 2013 Update

Dear Parents:

Here is a brief overview of what we are learning in the classroom:

Spelling--There will be no spelling test this Friday.  Instead, students should study for an immigration and heritage quiz this Friday.

Bible--Students have completed some great projects that chronicle the life of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

Writing--Students have written about the Kingdom of God.  Here are some samples of what students wrote:

"Anyone can enter the Kingdom of God.  Not only Christians, but sinners can be part of the Kingdom."--Hannah

"To enter the Kingdom of God, you must leave everything and repent, like Levi who asked Jesus for forgiveness."--Noor

"In the Kingdom of God Jesus shows love by healing the sick and helping people in need."--Andy

Science--Students are learning about renewable resources in British Columbia.  We will develop a Christian perspective on how humans may be responsible stewards of God's creation.  Students should review Chapter 9 in preparation for their test on Thursday, March 14th.

Social Studies--Students have completed their Heritage Projects and are learning about immigration  in Canada.  Please see our students projects on our website.

Here are some reasons why people from all over the world wish to live in Canada:

"Canada is the best place to live because we have proper medical care."--Rebekah

"Canadian citizens can say things against the government without being killed or thrown into prison."--Odelia

"People from other countries stay in Canada to find jobs and earn money fro their families."--Daniel

Math--Students are learning about measurement concepts such as perimeter, area, and volume.

Art--Students are learning about the life of Emily Carr, a famous Canadian artist who made her home in Victoria.  Much of her art work was inspired from the land and First Nations in British Columbia.

Reading--Currently, we are reading stories of immigrants, the challenges they have leaving their homeland to begin a new life in Canada.  Students will share about their particular book with the whole class.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

Blessings,

Heritage Projects by Grade 5W

The Grade 5 class has been learning about heritage and  immigration to Canada. So,  we were to create a poster about how our families immigrated to Canada. Each person was expected to include a 3 paragraph story about how their family immigrated to Canada. They were also told to include some facts about their country of origin to and to compare it to Canada. Also a poem was to be written about a symbol in their country. They were only to put 3 pictures to include in their poster. A family tree was optional.  We learned to value and respect people from all around the world who have made Canada their home.

Here are some samples of our Heritage Projects:

DEAR DAY Wednesday March 6th and Heritage Lunch March 8th

Dear Students and Parents:

We have a busy few days ahead for our class.  On Wednesday we will have a DEAR DAY when students may bring their favorite books to read.  Also, it will give me an opportunity to conference with students about
their learning during second term

On Friday March 8th we will be having our annual HERITAGE LUNCH.  Please remember to avoid any NUTS and SEAFOOD in your dishes as we have a number of students with allergies.    Also, parents if you are able to help please come from 11:30-12:00 with setup or from 12:45-1:15 with cleanup.

Thanks,

Mr.Wu
