December 5th to 9th

Less than two weeks to Christmas break...

Here is a brief overview of topics that are being covered in class:

Math--Fractions expressed as words, illustrations, circles, sets, check this website for fun math games, activities, and videos to review concepts and skills learned in class http://www.mathplayground.com/games.html
Science--Machines do work for us, fun games, activities, about simple and complex machines http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-machines/index.shtml
Bible--Isaiah, the Messiah, and Jesus
Physical Education--Basketball
Social Studies--The Gold Rush in BC check out this website for  more interesting information about the Gold Rush http://www.cariboogoldrush.com/intro.htm

Writing--The World in 2030, students are generating ideas of what the world will be like in 2030.  In class we are reading 2030: A Day in the Life of Tomorrow's Kids by Amy Zuckerman and James Daly.  Students are using their imagination to think about how different their lives will be in 2030.  Students will keep a written record of their ideas about the future.  Below is a sample of one student's imagination:

Katrina 2030 Dec 6, 2011
1.   In 2030 the transportation would be hovercrafts, flying cars, skateboards, roller-skates, snowboards and much more. The buses that take you to school would fly and have food coming from the seats in front of you. In cars you press a button on the ceiling and jelly beans, lifesavers and pizza flavored fishy crackers appear.
2.  School in 2030 would have robot teachers that do not give you homework and in art we would go on our computers and look up the artist you want to study, then on the computer there is an app that helps you do the art that the artist does. Like for ex. Pablo Picasso does cubism and Heri Matisse does fauvism. Then you get a mark and you mostly get an a+ or a B+.

3. Gym in 2030 would have flying hoops for basketball, flying tennis balls for tennis, floating pucks for hockey, and flying volleyball nets for volleyball.

Reading--Cariboo Runaway, novel study

In class we read the story "ONE" a Teacher's Choice Award book by Kathryn Otoshi about bullying.

 Pia                                                                                                                         Nov.29/11
                                                       One
In this story, there was a color named Blue and he was always bullied by
Red.  Red would say, “I’m hot and you’re not,” and Blue would feel very
discouraged. The other colors would always try to cheer and brighten him up by
saying that he was a nice color, but they never stood up to Red.
Then one day, One came along and said jokes to all the colors. Everyone was
laughing and having a good time until Red saw what was happening. He yelled,
“Stop laughing!” Everyone stopped laughing except for One. He just stood tall like
an  arrow and said firmly, “No.”
When Yellow saw this she turned to a two, Green turned to three, Purple
turned to four, Orange turned to five, and Blue turned to six! Red couldn’t stop
them from having a wonderful time anymore because they would just stand up to
him.
Red got so mad he rolled and rolled and felt so small. He thought about how he acted to
all of the colors and he admitted that it isn’t good to bully. So, he turned into a seven and
became friends to everyone.
I learned that it’s not good to bully and if you are bullied, stand up to the bully.

BMV to learn for December 5th

Isaiah 35: 4, 5, 6, 10

Hope for Restoration

4 Say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, and do not fear,
for your God is coming to destroy your enemies.
He is coming to save you.”
5 And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind
and unplug the ears of the deaf.

6 The lame will leap like a deer,
and those who cannot speak will sing for joy!

10 Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return.
      They will enter Jerusalem[
a] singing,
      crowned with everlasting joy.
   Sorrow and mourning will disappear,

How do these verses describe the coming Messiah?

In what ways do they describe Jesus in the New Testament?

Week of November 28th to December 2ne

Students had a great Christmas Activity Day last Friday; again thank you to all the parent-volunteers.

Today students received a new spelling list, the test will be on Friday.  Tomorrow students will receive a new BMV from Isaiah; the BMV will be due on Monday, December 5th.

In Science we have been learning about simple machines.  Students are designing a title page that includes a border with examples of simple machines, an illustration that shows how machines make work easier, and an explanation of how simple machines are used in everyday life.  The title page is due Wednesday, Novemeber 30th.

Last week we read the Teacher's Choice Award book, "The One", a story about bullying.  In response students wrote personal reflections about bullying that we are sharing in our class.

Science Simple Machines

In class we have been learning about six simple machines: a pulley, screw, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, and lever.  Students are thinking about a simple task like turning on a light switch or watering a plant and using ten or more steps involving simple machines to complete a task.

Students should check out the website http://www.rubegoldberg.com/?page=gallery for more ideas and examples of simple machines.

November 15 Bible and Bible Memory Verses

Parents please ensure that your child has a New Living Translation STUDY Bible.  This week's BMV is Isaiah 9:1,2, 6-7.  Due: Monday, November 21st.  We have been learning about the Old Testament prophet Isaiah and the historical context in which he lived.

Isaiah  9:1-2, 6-7
Hope in the Messiah

1 [a]Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
2 [b] The people who walk in darkness
      will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,[c]
      a light will shine.

6 For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
      And he will be called:
   Wonderful Counselor,[d] Mighty God,
      Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His government and its peace
      will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
      for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
      will make this happen!

Ethan's Class Update

My Grade 5 Class So far….
So far grade five has been fantastic! We get to do so many fun activities. Mr.Wu is also a VERY funny and nice teacher. There are also a lot of good books in the classroom. I have learned a lot about Fort Langley and the Fur Trade and had great fun building my storehouse project. We have also had many great read alouds such as Dear Mrs.LaRue, Stanley’s Party and Dinosaurs Go To School! We also saw many YouTube videos and we learned about Michael Buble for current events. I also enjoyed cross country racing in Bear Creek. We also have fantastic buddy classes with the kindergarteners. One of the special days that we recently had was called “Fort Day”. In Fort Day we baked banek bread and made our own Coast Salish menu. We even got to nibble on some jerky! That is how Grade 5 is going for me.

Grade 5W October 2012 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

English Bay  August 2012 taken by DWu on Iphone4

We are pleased with the progress students have made in Grade 5 in the last few weeks. Some routines are becoming habit and others we continue to work on. Friendships and unity are being built and the atmosphere is one where learning takes place.   Areas needing improvement are less talking during teaching times, faster transitions and paying close attention to instructions.  Students are working hard to follow our class rule to treat everyone with kindness and respect.
Last Friday we have had our first field trip of the year to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Natural Historic Site in Richmond.  Students learned how different cannery machines processed salmon many years ago.
A big thank you to all the parent-drivers.

Class Schedule:  As of this week our schedule will generally remain the same. Students will be given a copy of the schedule in their home-school binder by the end of next week.

Homework: Now that we are entering into October, more of the regular homework load will begin. After Thanksgiving, we will begin our weekly spelling dictations with quizzes taking place on Fridays.  Students will also be given regular Math homework and weekly Bible Memork work.

Bear Creek Cross Country Race (TBA in October): This year not all students will be automatically going to Bear Creek. If your child qualified for the run you will receive a permission form and details about the day. On October 11th Grade 5 students will run at VCS to qualify for Bear Creek.
In general, students should be prepared for the weather, whatever that may be. This may mean wearing layers, bringing rain gear, maybe even extra shoes! Their lunches should contain healthy snacks they can eat 45 minutes before it is their turn to race. Excellent behavior is expected throughout the entire day.

Fort Day (Oct. 26): This event allows students to participate in various activities associated with life as a fur trader.

Field trip to Fort Langley National Historic Site (October 29): Students will have the opportunity to experience what it was like for fur traders to work at Fort Langley during the winter months as we participate in the “Fur Trade to Colony” program.  More details will be provided on the permission form that will be sent home in a couple of weeks.

Class blog:  Please check for weekly updates regarding homework, important dates, field trips, and learning in the Grade 5W class,

What we are doing:

Spelling
The students will have their first spelling list the week after Thanksgiving. They will take be taking a list home every Monday and the test will be on the Friday. They will be two marks given; one for the correct spelling and one for the correct markings. There will also be two sentences dictated to them where they will be marked for punctuation, capitalization and spelling. Five phonograms and a spelling rule will be tested each time as well.

Writing
We are focusing on the ideas component of our writing.  We will be using the Six Traits method with more emphasis on writing catchy beginnings and good endings. We are generating creative, original and focused ideas as we begin our Writer’s Workshop.  At times, students will be asked to share their writing with their parents.

Math
We have been reviewing place value and various ways to represent numbers. We are now working with decimal numbers and fractions.

Social Studies

We will be starting a  BC history unit on Fur Trading and learning about Fort Langley.
Science

The next chapter of our Forces and Simple Machines unit will focus on the simple machine and how they use force to help us work.

Reading
So far this year we have been applying the Smart Reading strategies to various short stories.  This month we will begin a novel study titled Cariboo Runaway, which is a historical fiction novel that shares an adventure story during the Cariboo Gold Rush (coincides with our Social Studies unit).

Bible
We are focusing on creation in Genesis.  As you are probably already aware, we have already started learning memory verses.

French  and Music
Mrs.Kawa teaches French on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays;  Mr.Kwong teaches Music.on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Physical Education
We have completed our soccer unit and will begin volleyball after Thanksgiving.  We will have PE on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

H.A.C.E.
To begin we reviewed the qualities of a successful student.
Next , we will be moving into building positive relationships and learning about bullying.

Thank you for your involvement in your child's life at school.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions about your child.
